Buying Robotics Gear in Bulk? Ask These 6 Questions First.
Not all suppliers are created equal. If you’ve ever ordered a box of robot parts and ended up with a sad pile of mystery wires and mislabeled junk, you already know that.
When you’re buying robotics gear in bulk — whether it’s for a classroom, a project, or resale — the supplier matters just as much as the gear.
I’ve dealt with enough duds over the years to know exactly what should’ve been asked before hitting “checkout.”
So here you go. Six questions I wish I’d asked way earlier in my robotics journey.
1. Are the Components Tested or Just Boxed?
This is a big one. Just because something’s in a sealed bag doesn’t mean it works.
Ask directly:
“Do you power-test or function-test any of the boards or motors before shipping?”
If they dodge the question or say “We trust our manufacturer,” that’s a red flag. A quick pre-ship test — even just a voltage check or boot confirmation — can mean the difference between a successful rollout and hours of frustration.
2. Can I Mix and Match Kits or Components?
Most suppliers will try to sell you a cookie-cutter pack. And sometimes that’s fine.
But in a real-world build? You’ll need flexibility. Maybe you need 20 more servos, but fewer sensors. Maybe you already have half the parts.
A good supplier will say:
“Yeah, send us your list and we’ll quote it custom.”
That’s who you want.
3. What Happens If Something’s Broken?
Because let’s be honest — even the best supplier will ship a dud now and then.
Ask:
“What’s your replacement policy for DOA parts?”
You’ll learn everything you need to know from how they answer. If they start talking in circles, or if you get a wall of fine print about restocking fees, run.
A real supplier will say, “If it’s our fault, we’ll fix it.” Period.
4. Do You Have Photos of the Actual Inventory?
This one sounds minor, but trust me — you want to see what’s going in that box.
Stock photos lie. I once ordered what was supposed to be a pro-level sensor array, based on a pristine manufacturer photo. What I got looked like it fell off a shelf in 2007.
If they can’t show you the real parts — even just a quick phone snap — you might be rolling the dice.
5. Can You Provide Documentation or Datasheets?
Even experienced builders need specs. And newbies? They need all the help they can get.
So ask:
“Do your kits include wiring diagrams, example code, or datasheets?”
If they say no — or worse, “just Google it” — then they don’t actually care about your experience. And that’s a supplier you’ll grow to resent quickly.
6. How Fast Do You Ship, Really?
“We ship within 24 hours” is nice. But what they actually mean is more important.
Ask:
“When will I get a tracking number?”
“Are all items in stock now?”
“Where do you ship from?”
The answers will tell you if they’re running a warehouse… or just drop-shipping parts they’ve never even seen.
Final Tip
If you’re ordering bulk robotics gear and you don’t feel like you can ask these questions — find someone you can ask.
It doesn’t have to be us. But it should be someone who talks straight and stands behind what they send out.
That’s how you avoid headaches — and actually get to the fun part: building.
